Manchester Fashion Week’s opening night show sashayed into the city oozing style and positivity, highlighting Mental Health Awareness Week.The show took place to a sold out audience on the rooftop of Hotel Football with stunning views across the city on a sunshine drenched evening. Our models were empowered by the brands they wore. Highlights includes:
Opening the show was elaborate designer Maria Kelly from Bees Knees Boutique. Her collections are a favourite for costumes for Manchester Pride.
GoGairy Hand Painted Leather is a design by Richard Gair, a double organ transplant survivor who uses his love of at as therapy to copy with the pain he suffers everyday. He is on a daily cocktail of over 30 tablets to keep him alive, he is facing another life threatening operation to remove a hernia the size of a watermelon, a condition brought on from his initial kidney and pancreas transplant. Once suicidal, he says Gogairy Hand Painted Leathers has changed his life in a positive way as he used his love of art and designing as therapy whilst recuperating, and he is now excited for the future and his unique brand. He is also a carer for his 75 year old father.
Kintsugi is an all inclusive fashion brand launching their debut collection at Manchester fashion week. Owner Emma McCelland from the north west started designing clothes for women in wheelchairs who want to feel elegant and stylish. She saw a gap in the market for crating clothes that are more functional and less fiddly and was alarmed that there are more choices of pewter than there are disabled wear.
Box & Scandal is a brand new menswear underwear design set up to fight against the trend of the perfect yet unrealistic male image. Recognising that this can have a negative impact on men’s mental health, the brand only uses normal men. Our models included Mark, a 53 year old with a 38 inch waist, a survivor of prostrate cancer who has now been told another form of cancer has been detected in his body. Rob also featured, a man who shrunk 10 stone but still has evidence of loose skin .
Lethal Combination was set up recently by a 21 year off couple Manisha and Chabs form manchester who saw a gap in the market for high quality sportswear for men. Manisha is a full time nurse and Chabs runs a fruit and vegetable wholesale business and they have worked around the clock around their daytime jobs to bring this collection to life.
Be Younique Be You is the brand of retired seamstress Anne Wilkinson who designs dresses for girls of all ages as a hobby. The catwalk featured 11 year old Kirsty who was walking for the first time in 2 years after beating Leukemia
Haute couture was represented by Manchester designers Nooshin Moradi, originally form Tehran who designs handprints her own fabrics and Flencirose, originally from Zimbabwe. Both women use their heritage as inspiration for their unique and breathtaking collections.
Amanda Moss, director of Manchester Fashion Week, said , “Fashion is for absolutely everyone and Manchester Fashion Week aims to strip away the snobbery associated with high fashion and make it all inclusive for everyone.The show has a message that fashion uplifts people and can be used in many ways to create happiness and a positive mental attitude “
