THE LEATHER SATCHEL COMPANY
Established in Liverpool, England almost 50-years ago during 1966 by artisan leather-worker, Mr Stephen Hanshaw, the company was originally formed from of Members of the British Guild of Master Craftsmen and family members. The company is still 100% owned by the Hanshaw family and is now directed by Keith Hanshaw. Keith is the nephew of the the original founder and started working at the company at the tender age of 14-years old and began his apprenticeship at age of 16. Even today approximately 30% of the current team still consists of family members.
The company produces a variety of leather bags and accessories using traditional techniques that haven't changed greatly since the company was founded. This gives the companies' products a unique style that is now being imitated by many other companies in the marketplace.
During the 1980s and 1990s most leather-working companies that existing in England either moved their production to China or ceased trading. This family business struggled on and throughout the later years of the 1990s, The Leather Satchel Co. was the only surviving maker of the classic Oxford and Cambridge style satchel and classic British music case. Many companies (some very large and well-funded) have established themselves in recent years to take advantage of large demand by mimicking their classic style of leather-work.
